She is very much in touch with her own roots and has been able to balance both Eastern and Western cultures to make substantial impacts personally and professionally. Over the course of two decades Ruhena has been a committed activist in eliminating domestic violence, gender abuse and harmful practices together with elderly abuse. Her work is quite prominent in the Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities and she has been an advocate of women and girls rights in Bangladeshi community She is passionate in combating gender abuse and harmful practises for women and girls by educating and training in healthy relationships and lifestyle, understanding inter-generational cultures and inter-sectional diversity, raising awareness in mental health within diverse groups most specifically in Bangladeshi community. Ruhena is one of the founding members of charity ‘Mandeleo Services’, established in 2003. Later, in 2015 she branched out into ‘Mandeleo Services Property Management’ which offers second stage refuge survivors of domestic abuse victims and provides settlement, gain independence as well as help rebuild life after fleeing domestic abuse in affordable housing. Her role has been imperative in the improvement of standards and equality in health, wellness and social care over the past 20 years. After starting her career in Law and Human Resources, Ruhena became qualified British Association Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) registered and started practising psychotherapeutic counsellor. She now has her own successful private counselling practice “Purple Cloud Therapy” specialising in BAME communities to help break the barriers and stigma, support people struggling with mental health within the Asian and Bangladeshi Diasporas for over 7 years. Ruhena is currently an Occupational Health Counsellor for local Council, Counsellor, Mental Health and Domestic Abuse Trainer, Independent Domestic Abuse Advocate (IDVA), and Property Manager providing support for those in need. She has played a prominent role in providing counselling therapy in hard to reach communities and marginalised BAME communities. Ruhena has worked in a wide range of sectors such as Law, Human Resources, Social Care, Mental Health and Education giving her great insight to a range of opportunities for a positive impact within grass root communities. Her inter-generational and inter-sectional work has been an important factor in making social changes as she recognises from her own background the impact it has on self development. Her work has been very inclusive as she has incorporated this within diverse groups such as African, Caribbean and European together with people from the Bangladeshi diasporas to make social changes and have positive influences. She has been a huge champion for eradicating gender violence by vocalising her stance and being a guest speaker in many BAME forums. Ruhena recognises from her own experience of honour based violence, gender abuse and how these intercultural abuse and trauma affect ones well-being, therefore, embeds her work on prevention campaigns particularly with the younger generations as she has a strong belief of “prevention is better than cure”, she continues to advocate social change, address these important issues earlier in schools and community centres.
